Liaison Program

The liaison program provides a senior with the opportunity to become a leader in the areas of information, media, technology or communications within the Library, Instructional Technologies and Communications (LIT@COM) department and the Textbook Center.

The goal of the program is to have each liaison:

  • become a master apprentice in the operational and technological aspects of each department;
  • practice techniques to become an efficient manager and trainer for other work service students and adults in the NCSSM community;
  • develop skills to work independently in order to manage a specialized project; and
  • provide the clients in the NCSSM community with information and media technology expertise and support.

Responsibilities

In each area of the LIT@COM department and Textbook Center, a liaison will have the following responsibilities:

Library Services

  • Manage all library services
  • Assist clients in using online resources
  • Assist with the processing of all library materials
  • Provide training for work service students
  • Prepare the collection for inventory
  • Manage remote inventory processes
  • Utilize creative skills for creating bulletin boards and displays for National Library Week and school sponsored programs

Media Services

  • Manage all media services
  • Assist with set-up for media presentations
  • Monitor classroom media equipment
  • Prepare new items for circulation
  • Troubleshoot media questions and problems for clients in the community

Communications Center Services

  • Manage all communications center services
  • Assist with large photocopying jobs and special projects
  • Manage delivery of supplies throughout the campus
  • Work independently on selected projects
  • Be on call to supervise the communications center projects

Textbook Center

  • Enforce all textbook center policies and procedures
  • Schedule to work before the opening of school
  • Schedule to work at the beginning and conclusion of each trimester
  • Be prepared to handle multiple tasks and to problem solve

Application for 2011-2012

The LIT@COM department selects between 5 and 10 rising seniors to participate in this program. Applications are available in February and due in March. For additional information about the Liaison Program, please contact Barbara Newnam.

Qualifications

A desirable candidate will:
  • be in excellent academic standing;
  • have the ability to work independently;
  • show a willingness to learn and teach; and
  • be responsible and dependable.

Knowledge

A desirable candidate will know:
  • customer service techniques;
  • library policies and procedures;
  • how to set-up and operate media equipment; and
  • how to organize and multi-task.

Commitments

To participate in the Liaison Program, each liaison must be able to:
  • report to NCSSM during the week before junior move-in;
  • participate in leadership activities and programs;
  • assist in the preparations for the new school year;
  • assist in the training of the LIT@COM work service students;
  • be on call to assist all departments;
  • follow a regular assigned schedule; and
  • participate in group development sessions and meetings.
