Finding Articles from Journals and Other Periodicals

The easiest way to look for articles from journals or other periodicals is to use an index. An index allows you to search for specific articles using a keyword(s) or subject(s). Some indexes contain only citations and/or abstracts, and some provide the full-text of articles.

The library has access to a large number of indexes, often called databases, covering a wide range of subjects. Click here for a complete list.

Once you have a list of the articles (citations) that you are interested in reading, you will want to gain access to their full-text. Some resources will link to the full-text, usually as Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) or HTML files, from the citation itself. Others may offer a graphic, NCSSM Full Text, or text link, which you can click on to check for the availability of the full text. Clicking on the graphic or text will take you to Journal Finder, a service that pulls together the Library’s electronic journal titles into one place. Journal Finder will provide information about whether a title is available online or in print. If a title is not available, you can select to order it through the Library’s interlibrary loan system.
