Arothroscopic Reconstructive Surgery
- The surgeons first take out the pieces of the torn ACL using a motorized tool called a shaver.
- In
some patients, the "notch" where the ACL is located is extremely
narrow. If this is the case the notch can be widened using a burr so
that there is not a risk of rerupturing the newly resonstructed.
ACL.
- At
this point, the surgeons focus on getting the graft. It can either come
from the patellar tendon, hamstring, or cadaver. The differences in
these grafts are discussed in the next section.
- Then they drill holes in the femur and tibia using an endoscopic femoral drill guide.
- The graft is then placed through the tibia,
through the knee joint, and into the femoral drill hole.
- Bioabsorbable screws are placed into the femoral drill hole and the tibia. (Seen to the right)
- The incisions are closed up and the procedure is finished.
