Hours
 |
The Communications Center is located on
the ground level of the Bryan Center and is open Monday through Friday:
7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Certain rooms of the Communications Center
are accessible by authorized staff at other times by checking out
a key from the Circulation Desk during normal Library hours. |

Desktop Publishing and Copy
Center
 |
The computer in the Communications Center uses the Xerox
DCCS50 as a scanner and has a large screen and desktop publishing
software installed such as Photoshop, Illustrator, PageMaker, InDesign
and so on. With these professional programs, you can make sophisticated
publications. |

Scanner
 |
To digitize an image, use the scanner in the Library's
Sight + Sound Studio or the scanner or color copier in the Communications
Center. The staff in the Communications Center will help you scan
your images and size them for publication. |

Fax
 |
• Put the paper to be faxed face up in the handler
• Touch the MONITOR/CALL button; you will hear a dial tone
• Dial 16 + PIN + 9 + 1 + Area Code + 7 digit number •
You will hear the machine dial the number and the number ring
• When you hear the fax modem sound (the irritating, high pitched
sound), press the green START button • The document handler
will pull the sheet(s) to be faxed through and start sending them
• Your confirmation sheet will display either a row of the letter
A (AAAA) or nothing for the number (including PIN) you called
• If you hear a busy signal when you dial the number, the best
thing to do is touch the CANCEL button and try your fax again later. |
Copying Services
 |
To request photocopy services:
1. Bring the originals to the Communications Center along with
a completed Communications Center request form.
2. Place the job in the Communications Center in-box, or give it
directly to the Communications Center Manager.
3. Log the job on the "Copying Log". |
Communications Center staff use the "Copying Log" to prioritize
jobs according to time submitted, time needed, job requirements, and perceived
institutional priority. The number of original pages and any additional
finishing services determines turn-around times:
# COPIES TURN AROUND TIME
1 to 750 1 business day
751+ 2 business days
Requests for collating, binding, or special colored paper inserts require
an additional business day. Patrons needing a faster turn-around time
should consult with the Communications Center Manager to determine if
that is feasible.
Completed jobs are available for pick-up in the Communications Center
by the turn-around time indicated. Upon request, the Communications Center
will notify the patron by phone or e-mail when the job is completed. The
Communications Center will also deliver completed jobs to faculty/staff
mailboxes upon request.
Only the Communications Center Manager, and specially approved and trained
staff, may use the Xerox copier. Staff trained for use of the Xerox copier
may use the machine when it is not in use by the Communications Center
staff and may access the machine after hours by checking out the key to
the Xerox copier room from the Circulation Desk during normal Library
hours.
Charges
 |
Photocopy services and resources are available for
NCSSM programmatic purposes. The Communications Center charges 2
cents per impression made for black and white 8.5 x 11 inch page
and $.25 for each color 8.5 x 11 inch page.
Note that a single sheet of paper has two sides and can contain
two pages. Therefore a double sided color sheet will be billed at
$.50. A 12 X 18" sheet of paper may contain four pages. |
Color transparencies cost $.1.00 each. Binding fees are 75 cents per
unit. The cost is automatically charged to the department making or requesting
copies by using a four-digit code assigned to each department or academic
unit. Each month, the Communications Center calculates how many copies
are made from each account and creates a bill for each account. The Business
Office then transfers the billed amount from the department to the Communications
Center.
NCSSM photocopy resources are to be used only for NCSSM programmatic
purposes. Copies for personal use may be made on the coin-operated machine
located in the Library at the rate of 10 cents per page. Personal use
color copies are available by paying Willie Painter $1.00 each. He will
issue a receipt when payment is made.
Printing
 |
The Minolta Di350 is a networked black and white 600dpi
printer capable of duplex printing (front and back of the same sheet
of paper) up to 11X17 inches. The Xerox DCCS50 is the color printer/copier
which prints up to 12X18 inches duplexed. Both are designed to create
high quality original prints of digital files. |
Our Cannon ImageRunner 8500, which replaced the obsolete Xerox 5390,
will soon be on the network also. Copies printed on either machine are
billed to the departments. Students may use these machines if an adult
gives them permission and a Lit@Com printing pass.
The Minolta Di350s use PostScript III technology--invented after NT4.
Certain symbols and bullets may not print if the computer sending the
job is running on Windows NT4 technology. Use a computer running on Windows
2000 technology or send the job to Mr. Painter, Communications Center.
He will print the job for you.
Adobe Acrobat files (.pdf) do not use PostScript technology. Send all
Acrobat (pdf) files to the Minolta Di350 PCL driver in the Communications
Center or to the Xerox Color Copier (DCCS50).
If printing B&W to the Xerox DCCS50, be sure to set it to B&W
in both the main properties menu and the "Advanced" properties
menu--otherwise it might print out using the color settings at $.30/page
rather than $.02.
