The privilege to check out materials from the Borden Mace Library is available to all faculty, staff, and students.
The circulation desk is located directly inside the front doors of the library, on the left.
| Monday - Thursday | Friday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 a.m. - 9:45 p.m. | 8:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. | 5:00 - 9:45 p.m. |
Services provided at the circulation desk include borrowing library equipment or materials, reserve items, and/or current periodicals. Staff at the desk are also available to answer questions that you may have about the library, it's collections or services.
A personal NCSSM identification card with either an embedded barcode or a LIT@COM patron barcode is required to check out materials. Each user is responsible for all items checked out on his/her card.
A lost or stolen identification card must be reported to Campus Resources immediately; a replacement will be issued by the Head of Security.
Students may only have a total of 10 items checked out at one time. Of the 10 items, a maximum of 3 can be CDs (does not include audio books), DVDs, or videocassettes.
Students are unable to borrow materials when they have an overdue item or items. See section, Overdue Items and Fines, for additional information.
The same circulation loan period applies to all users. Faculty needing library materials for curriculum support may request an extended trimester loan period.
| Material Type | Loan Period | Number of Renewals |
|---|---|---|
| audio books (on CD and cassette) | 3 weeks | 2 |
| audiovisuals | 3 weeks | 2 |
| books | 3 weeks | 2 |
| CDs | 5 days | 2 |
| DVDs | 5 days | 0 |
| journals, magazines, and newspapers | 0 | 0 |
| reference books | 0 | 0 |
| reserve materials | 0 | 0 |
| VHS cassettes | 5 days | 2 |
An item must be presented to staff in order for it to be renewed. A maximum of 2 renewals can be placed on an item only if it is not on hold for another patron.
A hold may be placed on any circulating item that is currently checked out. To place a hold, bring your NCSSM identification card and information about the item you wish to place a hold on to a library staff member. You will receive an e-mail from the library when the item becomes available for check out. If the hold expires before the item is returned to the library, a new hold will need to be placed.
A user is notified by campus mail and e-mail when materials are overdue. Materials returned within five days of the dated overdue notification do not accrue a fine. Students, who do not return items within five days, are charged the following fines:
| Material Type | Fine |
|---|---|
| circulating collection | $0.10 cents per day per item |
| overnight reserve items | $1.00 per hour |
| camcorder | $1.00 per day |
A student is not permitted to check out additional materials (including textbooks) until all overdue materials are returned or his/her library account is cleared through the Business Office. Clearing the account means paying accumulated fines, which may include the replacement cost of an item(s) and the $10.00 processing fee. All fines are deducted from the student security deposit; the library does not collect money. For further details, refer to the "Security Deposit" section of the NCSSM Student Handbook.
To stop fines from accumulating, the user must either return the materials or report them lost.
When equipment or library materials are returned damaged, the user is billed for the cost of repair or replacement plus a $10.00 processing charge. Repair or replacement shall be at the discretion of NCSSM.
Library equipment or materials are declared lost if they are not returned after two overdue notices. Following the second notice, the user will be charged the replacement cost of the item plus a $10.00 processing fee.
