Description of Work:

The school counselor directly counsels students and their parents regarding the NCSSM Online program - its courses, activities, and procedures. This position serves as the primary contact between the local school support personnel (distance learning facilitator, counselor) and the student/parents in developing a plan for technical, accessibility, and academic support for the students participation in the NCSSM Online program. In addition, this position is responsible for providing support to NCSSM Online instructors, assisting with proper student placements, NCSSM Online policy as it relates to student status in courses, and instructional support. Specific Tasks/Duties

  • Serves as primary contact between NCSSM Online, parents, and local school personnel.
  • Provides direct consultation and guidance to students, parents, and local school personnel on matters relating to courses, procedures, learning strategies, and college selection.
  • Provides advice and consultation to teachers of students with special needs.
  • Provides information on graduation requirements to administration, faculty, and local school personnel.
  • Coordinates activities on career and college exploration for students.
  • Assists in training support staff.
  • Works with NCSSM Online faculty and staff for meeting its student performance goals.
  • Participates in NCSSM Online presentations to various community contacts and/or educational groups each year.

Minimum Requirements:

A master's degree in Guidance and Counseling and a minimum of three years of experience in high school guidance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understands state and federal education guidelines.
  • Understands university admission requirements and procedures.
  • Understands state rules, laws, policies, and procedures applicable to middle and high school students.
  • Knowledge of and coordination skills in career exploration activities for students.

  • Proficiency in organization and coordination skills.

Dean of Distance Education and Extended Programs

 

 

The Dean of Distance Education and Extended Programs is a non-instructional faculty position which directs and administrates the Distance Education Technologies Dept. This department is staffed with 10 distance education staff and up to 10 instructional faculty to coordinate a synchronous (interactive videoconference – IVC) program of curriculum, professional development, and enrichment programming designed to meet the educational needs of the state. In addition, this position will work with the Vice Chancellor of Distance Education and Extended Programs (DEEP) to provide support for the NCSSM Online program, a virtual school designed to expand the residential academic program to students in an online environment, as well as for other extended program (outreach) initiatives.

 

Primary duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Administration of the distance education program via IVC
  • Supervision of faculty for programming of course content, professional development, and enrichment sessions to K-12 schools in North Carolina
  • Oversees supervision of technical staff to maintain technology and equipment in the distance learning department
  • Oversees supervision of graphics, multi-media, and other information and communication technology (ICT) production for staff
  • Coordinates with NCSSM deans and other administrative personnel for distance education faculty staffing, support for outreach initiatives, utilization of technology for campus needs, and support for technology training for NCSSM
  • Communicates and collaborates with school and district administration statewide for partnership in distance education programming and related initiatives
  • Works with the department to research, test, and integrate new and emerging technologies
  • Participates in NCSSM committees, councils, task forces, and other groups to represent distance education and technology efforts
  • Works with Vice Chancellor of DEEP, the administration of NCSSM, and department supervisory staff to set goals for the department and measures for these goals
  • Works with Vice Chancellor of DEEP to develop and implement instructional technology initiatives for the NCSSM community

 

General Requirements: Minimum of Master's degree; at least three years experience necessary in public secondary education and in use of educational technology. Skills in management/supervision and oral/written communications are a must. Deadline: Open until filled.

Instructional Designer

(Temporary Appointment – up to one year)

Description of Work:

The designer will assist with a new distance education program, NCSSM Online, in the Distance Education Department. This individual will collaborate within a production team to create high quality websites, graphics, audio/video, and other media. He/she will assist faculty members in the analysis, design, and development of effective courses and instructional programs. The designer will consult with faculty and staff on the appropriate instructional application of technologies and techniques on a one-on-one and group basis. The designer will assist in producing web-based course materials, including instructional websites, web graphics, web resources, and digital course materials. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work in a team and establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.

•  Experience in project management, including managing time, establishing priorities, and working with faculty to meet milestones.

•  Experience in designing and developing courses/training using distributed/distance technologies.

•  Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.

•  Demonstrated success in the production of online educational materials in an academic environment.

•  Expertise in web authoring applications and web 2.0 tools with emphasis on Flash, Photoshop/Illustrator, basic video/audio production, and basic HTML/CSS.

•  Proficiency using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment and the ability to train others in their use.

•  Experience and familiarity using academic course/learning management systems.

•  Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design.

 

Minimum Education and Requirements:

A bachelors degree in instructional design or a related field, and a minimum of three years of experience or additional training as an instructional designer working in the field of education (K-16).

 

 

Technical Support Specialist

Description of Work:

The specialist will assist with a new distance education program, NCSSM Online , in the Distance Education Department. This individual will collaborate within a team of faculty and staff to help build the network and software components required to run the program. Additionally, they will collaborate and assist the School ITS Department as needed. Duties include resolving hardware, software, and network problems for faculty, students, and distant school sites; managing the program's server and collaborating with the 3 rd party hosting site, working with software vendors to resolve problems and install updates when needed, build web-based applications to support program needs, and assisting the school Information Technology Services Department in web-based application development and creating and maintaining a virtual computing environment. The specialist will assist when needed in producing components for web-based course materials or helping faculty install and run new hardware/software technology. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work in a team and establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.

•  Experience managing technical projects of varying scales under minimal supervision.

•  Experience building, managing, and analyzing application software, including MySQL, Aspell, DBI, Mod_Perl, other CPAN modules, and code developed by NCSSM Online and Distance Learning.

•  L.A.M.P. (Linux Apache MySQL, PHP) Open Source Web Application Development.

•  Experience in project management, including managing time, and establishing priorities.

•  Experience with help desk-type support with end-users in resolving routine hardware, software, and networking issues.

•  Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to online teaching and learning.

•  Expertise in web authoring applications and web 2.0 tools with emphasis on Flash and HTML/CSS. In addition to solid HTML, XML and PHP skills, candidates should posses some knowledge of graphics and graphic design and also have some eCommerce and/or shopping cart experience.

•  Experience in data management and operational support for MySQL databases, including, but not limited to creating, modifying maintain and deleting tables and schemas.

•  Proficiency using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment and the ability to train others in their use.

•  Experience and familiarity using academic course/learning management systems

•  Expected to stay abreast of current technology and make recommendations as to how the NCSSM Online site could be managed to optimal effect.

•  An understanding of H.323 and video conference protocols, trends and technology is highly desired.

 

Minimum Education and Requirements:

A bachelors degree in computer science, systems analysis, or related field, and minimum of three years of experience or additional training in computer support, programming, database systems, and network engineering.
