Vice Chancellor for Distance Education and Extended Programs

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is a premier public, residential, co-educational high school for juniors and seniors with high intellectual ability and commitment to scholarship. Established in 1978, the School hosts the residential program at its Durham campus and provides distance education, teacher professional development, and outreach throughout the state. The School is the 17th constituent of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System.

NCSSM seeks an energetic and experienced leader for its outreach division, which includes its award-winning Distance Education Department. The successful candidate will be the administrative leader partnering with NCSSM administration and external stakeholders in its mission to be a catalyst for educational improvement statewide. This position provides oversight to NCSSM's institutional research and its extended programs, and is a vital member of the Chancellor's management team.

NCSSM has offered distance education for nearly two decades, utilizing changing technologies to offer technology-rich, advanced high school and early college courses and teacher professional development statewide. This Vice Chancellor oversees and collaborates with the NCSSM Online program team to implement and administrate its pilot program. Additionally, the Vice Chancellor provides statewide coordination of the UNC-sponsored Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics high school student program.

Requirements: Master's degree and five (5) years successful administrative experience in K-12 education or related field required. Doctorate preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The School is seeking an innovative individual with a broad background in the educational field, excellent oral and written skills, integrity, and demonstrated commitment to diversity. Competitive candidates will demonstrate depth and breadth of experience including developing and managing scalable educational programs using cutting-edge technologies, instructional design and delivery, strategic policy setting in the context of K-12 public education, multifaceted data collection and reporting systems, outstanding financial and political judgment, and strong interpersonal and coaching skills to leverage the talents of a diverse staff of academic and creative employees. A collaborative and facilitating leadership style is essential.
