Photo description

Cover of the antisemitic German children’s book, ‘Der Giftpilz’ (The Poisonous Mushroom).  Children’s literature reflected the nazification of academic subjects, and, in this case, portrayed Jews as dangerous mushrooms.

Relationship to guideline
Although Jews were the central victims of the Nazi regime, they also had a vibrant culture and long history in Europe prior to the Nazi era.  On the other hand, teachers should also emphasize that antisemitic ideas, such as those contained in this book, had also existed for hundreds of years and were not invented by the Nazis.
