Comments Regarding the School Calendar for June 2006 – June 2007

Inservice and TWD’s

We request that 10/30 be designated as a Teacher Work Day rather than an Inservice day so that faculty can complete student recommendations with an 11/1 deadline or complete other work.

We request that 2^nd trimester grades be due on 3/2 rather than 3/1 so there is adequate time to grade exams and compute averages in a thoughtful manner.

We request that the In-service day on June 11, be renamed a Teacher Work Day. This gives the same number of Teacher Work Days to complete grades at the end of Trimester 3 as at the end of Trimester 1 and Trimester 2.

If 4/13/07, in draft 4 labeled a teacher vacation day, is instead labeled a TWD, we are concerned that faculty who are new to state employment do not have the opportunity to take that day as a vacation day. 

Addressing “Broken Weeks”

Weeks with Extended Weekends that include a Friday or weeks with shortened periods between Tuesday and Friday are difficult for Math and Science classes because some periods miss their lab period that week.  To alleviate this difficulty in 06-07, we recommend that 1/29 and 5/21 be labeled as days on which we use a Friday schedule rather than a Monday schedule.)  This is similar to a process we used when we had alt days.)  Since we would lose a lab period on 10/11 for the PSAT, we request that 10/9 be a Wednesday schedule and 10/11 be a Monday schedule with shortened periods.
