Faculty Council Minutes, Election Day November 7, 2000

Announcements:

1.        Leslie Brinson called the meeting to order at 3:45 in Dot Doyle’s absence.

2.        Emily Gallagher asked the faculty to keep Dot in their thoughts as her parents continue to recover. Thanks to Jane, Angelina, Peg, and Julie for the meeting’s treats..

3.        Joan Barber reminded us about our invitation to the pre-Thanksgiving meal today (11/8) 4:30-6:00, encouraging us to come if even for a little while.

4.        Ginger Wilson reminded us to consider giving to the Combined Campaign.

5.        Minutes from the previous two Faculty Council Meetings were passed.  Meeting adjourned at 4:30.

Discussion Items:

1.        Jon Miller and Tom Trocano presented the Faculty Welfare’s Committee Report on student workload issues.  Rather than making recommendations, the committee posited several questions in areas of concern to the faculty regarding our ability to help juniors adjust better to NCSSM.  If you would like to see the document replete with the discussion items they covered, please email either Jon Miller or Tom Trocano.

2.        Steve Warshaw shared data on the ethnicity, gender, and regional distribution of the students who have been placed on academic probation or have withdrawn.  There are 30 students currently on probation; 23 of them are male.  4 of the 23 males are African American and represent 33% of all junior African American males on campus.  16 students have withdrawn from NCSSM this year, none of them have been African American males; one of the 16 withdrawals was an African American female.  Most withdrawals seem to cluster in metropolitan areas.  Junior Caucasian males constitute a majority of those on probation and represent 17% of the total Caucasian junior male population on campus.

Additionally, Steve shared the distribution of student grades.  The data is in chart form below.
