Faculty Workload Discussion
General Discussion:
- Do you think you have too much work to do?
- Why do you we think we are overworked?
- Overworked compared to what? Who?
- What are you not getting done that you think you should be
doing?
Reorganizing the way we work:
- What activities take the most time?
- What activities are the least productive?
- What activities could better be consolidated and given to
others to do?
- Are all the forms, emails, committees necessary?
Redefining our jobs:
- How many hours do you work outside of the normal 8:00 - 5:00
time?
- How many extra classes, seminars, ISOs do you sponsor? Why?
- What clubs, teams, activities are you actively involved in?
- Would fewer classes, release time, or sabbatical make a difference?
Learning to Live with what we have:
- Would higher pay make you less concerned about being overworked?
- Would working 11 months help your situations, or make it worse?
- Are summers off enough time to relax and recharge?
Reports of discussion groups
Reorganizing the way we work:
- Twenty of the twenty-one people in this group do feel overworked.
- They felt like there were some inefficient activities including:
- Too many forms, too many signatures on these forms (for trips
with students, purchases, absences.
- Current computer facilities cause much inefficiency.
- Are we spending too much time grading and preparing for class
- Need more release time to learn new technologies
- Are we testing and collecting more assignments now than in the past?
- Is there a rising cycle of assignment giving?
- Is retesting a good idea? Just Say No!
- Tutor in groups, not one-to-one.
- There is not enough time to give special time to each student.
- Could office hours constrain when you see students?
- Are a relatively few students taking up a large amount of time?
- Absences, Labs need to be made up, causing extra work for teacher.
- Advising has become a much bigger job, especially if one or 2
(students) is a problem.
- Study Hall needs to go.
- Some committee assignments need release time, others need to be
done away with.
- Eliminate Alt Day Forms
- SPW and Alt Days add more work to faculty.
Redefining our jobs:
- How many hours outside of 8-5 time? 4+ hours per day
- Extra classes, seminars, etc? 1/semester
- Clubs, other activities? 1/year

a great idea.
- Too much work?
- Worse each year.
- high need students, parents
- Why are we overworked?
- added responsibilities

- Overworked compared to who? Not enough energizing work.
- What are we not getting done?

Learning to Live with what we have:
- Evaluation drives us to do as much as we possibly can.
- No mechanism in place for letting us know that we are doing well.
- Longer school year is not a solution, we need the summer off.
- More job satisfaction, not more pay, would do more to make job
less of a burden.
- We put a lot of pressure on ourselves.
- Invisible (less publicized but necessary) task need to be rewarded
as much as the highly visible ones.
- We could give up some opportunities for input, but that would
require more trust on our part that others were capable of making
good decisions.
- We are all overworkers and need to find ways to make this job
more enjoyable.
