similar to the EFC and distance learning initiatives
Need for faculty to participate in professional programs,
state and national
need financial support to attend
need a way to make missing school for such activities less
demanding on other faculty, those who have to stay behind and substitute
Classrooms Needs
Many classrooms were designed for smaller classes,
classes now much larger
Classes are very poorly equipped for multi-media,
even simple computer project lacking
We need to do a better job of spreading the word about the good things we are doing.
National Certification: We weren’t sure that this was worthwhile for our faculty.
Academic and Technology Issues:
We should quickly move from the current All-in-One system to a Window-based system on campus, but this will require a great deal of training time for faculty and staff.
Upgrading the campus word processing, email, and databases should happen immediately. Again, there must be training and time set aside to make the transition.
This group did not think that the fact that there is an increase in Special Study Options implies that we need more interdisciplinary courses. There are problems with the Special Study Options, including teacher overload, administrative hassles, scheduling. While students clearly want the SSOs it is not clear why, - they want small group experience, want more on their transcripts, they want to have a sense of control?
Instead of creating more interdisciplinary courses, we could offer more electives, but this would require additional faculty.
Creating interdisciplinary courses in a separate issue. Departments need to continue to evaluate courses. In the past, departments have decided against more interdisciplinary course.
In terms of accreditation, this group wishes the process were less of a burden.
