Students are expected to complete 3 hours of work service per week for a department on campus. This program is designed to provide “job training”, “soft skill development” and a mentoring opportunity with adults on campus. It also provides a valuable service to the NCSSM community. Students receive a grade each trimester (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) from his/her supervisor which is part of the student transcript. Seniors typically will have the same assignment for the entire year. Supervisors will have the opportunity to request and solicit specific students during May of the Junior year.
Juniors are asked to complete a work service questionnaire that will detail job skills and interests. The Work Service Coordinator assigns all Juniors based on need and interests. All Juniors are required to complete one trimester in either Grounds, Cafeteria or Housekeeping/Maintenance. The other two trimesters will be placed based on interest or previous skills.
Students are graded once a trimester by his/her supervisors. Students receive an overall grade (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) that will be placed on the transcript. Student also receive grades in the categories of Performance, Responsibility, and Attitude. A Satisfactory grade is required for continued admission at NCSSM and graduation. Students that are more than 3 hours behind in work service will be asked to meet with the Work Service Coordinator and supplemental will be provided for any student in danger of failing.
Students regularly scheduled to provide work service at 2:00 p.m or later on the day of an extended is excused with no penalty.
Students that are excused by the NCSSM Health Clinic are excused for work service for that particular day and will not have to make up the missed hours.
