Student Activities Events

Weekend Activities

The Student Activities Coordinator works with the Student Activities Board to schedule weekly activities. Activities may range from coffee house performances, game nights, scavenger hunts to trips off campus to local cultural events and festivals. The Student Activities Coordinator sends out weekly updates (This Weekend at NCSSM) every Thursday detailing the opportunities available. Activities are also posted on At A Glance.

Dances

NCSSM and the Student Activities Board sponsors a number of annual dances. Traditionally they are:

T-shirt Signing Dance

First weekend on campus. Designed for students to get to know one another and become more familiar with their community.

Halloween Dance

Students are encouraged to dress in costume. This will occur on the Saturday closest to Halloween.

Winter Semi-Formal

Students are expected to dress in semi-formal attire. Highlight includes a reading of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. Typically the 2nd Saturday in December.

Valentines Dance

Informal, may be combined as a Sadie Hawkins Dance. Will occur on the Saturday closest to Valentines Day.

Prom

a formal event, hosted off campus at the Museum of Life and Science in the Spring. Students do have to pay to attend.

Yearbook Signing Dance

– the last Friday of the school year, this is an informal dance. o Other clubs and organizations may host dances in addition to the dances listed above. o Faculty and staff may attend any of the events listed above for free. Students appreciate the community participation.

AirBand

an annual performance held on the Thursday before graduation. Staff and students perform dance routines or lip-synched performances to their favorite songs.

Loops

NCSSM provides weekly transportation opportunities for students to leave campus. Loops are taken to local shopping areas including 9th Street, Brightleaf Square, Streets of South Point Mall or Brier Creek Mall. In addition, special loops are provided to the Farmers Market, bowling alleys, or cultural events. Loops are advertised each week. Students must

Staff Participation

Staff members are always encouraged to participate, observe or help chaperone events. Students always appreciate the interaction with staff members outside of the classroom or traditional day setting.
