Graduation Requirement

All NCSSM students must complete 60, or more, hours for a non-profit agency during the summer before their junior or senior year. Students must complete all 60 hours for one agency, and may not be paid for their service. Students are encouraged to identify and approach agencies on their own initiative, but the Service Learning Coordinator can assist. Students and agency supervisor sign a service contract agreeing to days and hours of service. Students are expected to maintain a daily journal describing what they did, with whom they worked, what they liked and disliked. Supervisors will complete an evaluation of each student and return this to the Service Learning Coordinator.

Sharing Sessions

All students completing their service hours will participate in a sharing/reflection session with 7-8 peers and community members. At the sharing session, students will present a poster or power point presentation detailing where they worked, why they chose the particular agency, the goal of the agency, what they personally did and any highlights of their service. Students are evaluated based on a presentation rubric by a designated staff member. All students must satisfactorily pass the sharing session to receive credit.

Monthly opportunities

The Service Learning Coordinator facilitates weekly and monthly activities for students and staff to volunteer. These opportunities do not count toward the summer service graduation requirement. Opportunities are advertised on At A Glance and through email.
