Does NCSSM offer enrichment programs by videoconference?

NCSSM offers a variety of enrichment programs for K-12. Program offerings are updated each semester. To see the catalog, go to www.dlt.ncssm.edu/distance_learning/Enrich.htm

Does NCSSM offer courses for K-12 students by videoconference?

NCSSM offers semester and year long courses for high school students in North Carolina; the instruction is provided at no cost to the student and distant school.

Can any school in NC participate in NCSSM's courses via videoconference?

All NC public schools equipped with videoconferencing technology may request courses from NCSSM. See the website for information about course registration. Requests for courses exceed the department's offerings so not all requests can be fulfilled.

Where is a daily schedule of courses offered by videoconference?

A schedule of the classes offered each semester is available at www.dlt.ncssm.edu/distance_learning/coursesched.htm. Enrichment Programs scheduled with K-12 schools change week to week; weather and other school related issues often require changes to daily schedule. Contact Karl Coleman for the most current information on the schedule.

Does NCSSM offer professional development programs for teachers by videoconference?

NCSSM Distance Education teachers serve as mentors with high schools teachers statewide via videoconference. Called collaborations, these partnerships provides teachers at distant sites with an opportunity to learn new approaches to teaching an existing course, how to introduce a new course, develop an AP course or learn how to integrate technology in their teaching. DEEP will also develop and lead workshops on particular topics upon request.

Can an NCSSM student or staff member use videoconferencing to connect with an outside agency?

Arrangements can be made if staff and a room are available during the desired pgoram time. Provide at least two weeks notice in advance. Contact Carole Stern.

Which sites in NC does NCSSM connect with?

Most of the sessions conducted at NCSSM are connections to high schools with students enrolled in classes that meet daily. NCSSM connects with additional K-12 schools for enrichment programs for students and professional development for teachers. All of the community colleges and universities in NC have videoconferencing facilities. A growing list of K-12 schools are also equipped. Contact Carole Stern for more information.

Is it possible to connect with sites outside of North Carolina?

NCSSM uses a world wide standard fro videoconferencing. To make a videoconference call, the IP address for the distant site must be provided. An initial 'test connection' is recommended to identify problems that may interfer with the quality of the connection.

Can students and staff get assistance to record and stream presentations?

Can staff use the studios to develop multimedia projects?

Yes, if Distance Education staff and the facilities are available. Advance notice is recommended. 

Will a staff member assist me to host a webinar (Elluminate) for me?

If a webinar is offered by an outside provider, will a staff member set up the webinar for me to attend?

A webinar is conducted via computer. For a group of individuals to participate in a webinar together in one room, connect a laptop to a projector in any classroom.

Can staff outside of DEEP get assistance with graphics from the computer artists on staff?

Assistance may be provided if staff have time to help. Provide two weeks notice in advance. 

How can students and staff arrange a visit to watch a videoconference session?

Students and staff are welcome to tour the videoconferencing facilities at NCSSM. To arrange a visit, contact Carole Stern.

Can students and staff serve as content providers for DEEP?

Currently there are many NCSSM instructors and several students who provide enrichment programs for K-12 classes. The department welcome volunteer presenters.
