Endowment Funds

An endowed gift is one in which the principal is never invaded; the gift exists in perpetuity. Endowment funds are the best way to show commitment to and belief in a School, a department or a campus unit. Endowments are generally funded within five years of the initial contribution, and income paid out of the fund is paid to the benefiting area on an annual basis.

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Foundation endowment is composed of 10 individual endowed funds, established by donors who each had a vision for the School's future. NCSSM Foundation's endowed fund(s) generates income for its designated purpose according to the spending policies established by the NCSSM Foundation Board of Directors.

There is no minimum limit for donated gifts to already existing endowments including the Foundation's General Unrestricted Endowment, but the minimum amount for establishing an endowed fund within the NCSSM Foundation is $20,000. Additionally, there are minimums for establishing other types of endowed funds as outlined below:

  • Faculty Sabbatical (off campus) $500,000

  • (To provide faculty members the opportunity to take at least one semester off to concentrate on research and teaching interests.)

  • Faculty Sabbatical (on campus) $250,000

  • (To provide faculty members the opportunity to take at least one semester off to concentrate on research and teaching interests.)
