Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition: Three NCSSM students win national award

International Physics Olympiad: David Marks '00 from Apex has been selected as a member of the 2000 US team.

NC Student Academy Competition: Every NCSSM student who competed in April 2000 won either first or second place in their category.

Candace Randall '00 from Indian Trail won 1st place in Environmental Sciences and will represent NC at the National Student Academy Competition. "The Effect of Nitrate Concentration on Seed Germination and Subsequent Growth."

Yelena Burtseva '00 from Asheville won 1st place in Behavior. "Does Listening to Mozart Affect Memorization of Foreign Language Vocabulary?"

Jennifer Farrell '00 from Pinehurst won 2nd place in Advanced Biology. "The Effect of Estrogen Deprivation on Spine Density in the Hippocampal Neurons of Mice."

Vincent Ha '00 from Red Springs won 2nd place in Biology. "Sex Ratio in Early and Late Hatching and Randomly Paired Fundolophanchax gardneri akure Offspring."

Clara Scarry '00 from Chapel Hill won 2nd place in Behavior. "A Study of the Grooming Behavior of Ring-tailed Lemurs."

Daniel Yuan '01 from from Cary won 1st place in Mathematics and is an alternate for the National Student Academy Competition. "The Use of Linear Difference Equations to Model Mercury Content in the Great Lakes."

Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling: Two of the three teams that achieved an "Outstanding" answer in the 2000 ICM, an international contest for undergraduates, were from NCSSM. Of the 70 teams participating, there was only one other high school team; other teams were from institutions such as MIT, Peking University and the U.S. Military Academy.

Regional Chemistry Olympiad Exam: Jim Sukha '00 from Lewisville and Abby Shoun '01 from Durham received Outstanding scores and will advance to the National Chemistry Olympiad Competition.

 

NASA Student Involvement Program: The NCSSM team won 3rd place in the 1999-2000 national contest to Design a Mission to Mars. Team members: Greg Aldridge '00 from Laurinburg, Megan Duncan '00 from Fayetteville; Elango Cheran '01 from Cary and Sejal Shah '01 from Jamestown.

Durham Herald-Sun Front Page Award: Benita Jones '00 from Raleigh won a Front Page Award in Music.

Coca-Cola Scholar Athlete Awards: 52 athletes on fall & winter sports teams in 1999 received individual awards for an average GPA of 3.5 or higher. 16 of the 17 varsity teams received Team awards for an average GPA of 3.1 or higher.

1999 Science Olympiad: NCSSM garnered 16 medals, including two Firsts.

International Young Physicists Competition: NCSSM’s students represented the US in Vienna in 1999.

Toshiba Exploravision Contest: In 1998, a team of four students from NCSSM finished 1st in the South in this contest for the design of theoretical inventions.

Faculty

All teachers have at least a Master’s degree; 32% have PhDs.

In 1998-99, over 40 state, regional and national awards were presented to NCSSM’s faculty.

Over 5,000 North Carolina educators have attended professional development workshops led by NCSSM faculty on campus; thousands more have received NCSSM-generated professional development via distance learning.

NCSSM’s faculty currently serves 17 counties and 25 high schools in the state of North Carolina via Distance Learning.
