Learning More
There are three general classes of training available:
- statistical content courses
- training in pedagogy
- training in the AP program
Taking a statistics course is a great idea if you have never done so
(or not done so recently). Try to find one that uses the college
version of one of the usual AP texts. Try to avoid one that
emphasizes computations over concepts. At the college level, use
of statistical software suggests up-to-date content and pedagogy.
If nothing local works out you can Google "online statistics course".
The pedagogy expected in AP Statistics is similar to that described in
the NCTM Standards. You will have a big head start if you adopt
one of the usual AP texts and insist that students read it. There
are many workshops
available that provide information on the AP program and its
expectations. Go to AP
Central, log in (or register if you have not already done so) and
click on Institutes
and Workshops in the top menu bar.
You will get a dialog where you can select a subject (Statistics) and
enter desired dates and locations to search for. Be sure to change at
least one date or you will only get workshops happening today. At the
time of this writing, the page did not sort dates correctly for an
interval that included more than one year.
