Chancellor's Notes

Chancellor's Notes | August 2013

Summer is quickly drawing to a close and we are looking forward to the return of our seniors and to welcoming our 34th junior class to NCSSM.

We have had a busy summer here on campus hosting a series of summer enrichment programs such as Step Up to STEM, Labs for Learning, and the Summer Leadership and Research Experience and Summer Research and Mentorship. On July 26th several of our rising seniors, from both our residential and online programs, presented their summer research in poster and oral presentations. These students worked with NCSSM faculty, faculty from Duke, NC State, UNC-CH, and NC Central University, or professionals in Research Triangle Park, on projects such as cancer diagnosis and patient rehabilitation through technology enhanced clothing. These summer experiences allow us to extend our educational mission more deeply and broadly and to more students statewide.

By now, families of new junior and rising senior families should have received information for move-in day via their MyNCSSM online accounts. As always, we eagerly anticipate the return of our seniors and are excited to extend a warm welcome to our new juniors. Move-in day is one of my favorite days of the year, and I hope you are looking forward to it as well.

Our convocation ceremony will  be held the evening of Tuesday, August 13th and will mark the official start of our school year. This year's keynote speaker is Sharon Letchworth '88, Ph.D., a scientist, university educator, business person, and leader in her Winston-Salem community. Her remarks will lend unique wisdom, reflection and motivation to this special occasion, which may be viewed via LiveStream by families, alumni and other NCSSM constituents removed from campus. As a reminder, the attire is business formal for all, and students should arrive on campus with appropriate clothing for the occasion.

Lastly, I encourage all families to plan to attend NCSSM Family Weekend scheduled for September 13-14. The weekend begins with College Eve on Friday, during which admissions representatives from universities and colleges from across the nation converge on our campus to offer information and engage in conversation about the college selection and admissions process. On Saturday, we host an open house for families to visit students, meet faculty, attend classes, learn about student life and club activities, and socialize with school employees as well as one another.

I look forward to seeing everyone when you arrive on campus and to the coming year.

As always thank you for all that you do!

Thank you for all that you do for NCSSM.

Sincerely,

Chancellor
