A Cultural Analysis presented as A Rap in Two Parts

1.

Free love, an order

Reality, a border

To be crossed out

And thought about

Then jumped on and fought about

Simple was gold

Silence was old

And kids were bold

To rebel

Give ‘em hell

Cup soon to overflow

With what they didn’t know

About life and spin

Media would win

And make it a sin

To go with Tim

And See the connection

Between life and reflection

They were under inspection

And would fail

Turn tail

And give way

To the day

Where Weathermen

Would beat them

And unseat them

Turning love to anxiety

Money from piety

Moving bricks for bills

No more free pills

Ideals became wills

And the Flower children

Became Power children

Chasing corporate coattails

Leaning on boat rails

With mixed cocktails

Once inspiration

Now inundation

A new lost generation

Too late for veneration

Just rumination

On a people shot down

Where they stood their ground

Like at Kent State

Where it was too late

To stop the Guard

Four Kids fell hard

Never to stand-up

So put your hands-up

For free-love

2.

Peace never had a chance

Against the suburban romance

Of sterile conformity

Lost in the enormity

Of Rules and Regulations

Passed down from Corporations

Where they work, white-collars

To bring home dollars

And cents

Instead of the sense

They lost when they clipped on ties

And shaved again

Told lies

And prayed again

For the things they had

Now they’re just sad

Tossing back

The Prozac

To fight the depression

Of their new obsession

With climbing the ladder

That’s all that matters

‘Cause they gave in

Threw the towel and caved in

When they cleared the slate

Forgot the Haight

And began to desecrate

Hofmann, Alpert and Leary

Growing weary

Of dissension

Not to mention

The tension

From Big Brother

And mother

To get back reality

The new mentality

A life of penciled-in fun

never done

never won

Just extended

Amended

and ended.
