They killed a hyphen today
All drawn out in finery
And two last names neatly joined
Forever, or perhaps not so
Beautiful linen, the guests would say
There’s enough reason for a party.
Why do you celebrate everything?
Pompous and prim they bobbed for apples
In French dishes of the finest China
And all the other countries in the world
They had been to twice
Tie pins and modest jackets
Holding the noose up
For them to take the plunge
And fill out the paperwork later.
