The crumb falters on the edge
The gust of influence pushes it
Into the Abyss
And the lovers cry out in vain
Yet the crumb still falls
People dive
5 seconds, we’ve got 5 seconds!
But alas, the crumb bounces off the ground
And the crowd stutters –
Their hearts twist and their minds go blank
We had 5 seconds, we had 5 seconds!
But no. The crumb grows mold
And decays on the kitchen floor
As the band plays its trumpet
And the minister reads his farewell epithet
5 seconds of life, and 5 seconds of death!
And that tremendous harp plays its majestic tune
And then people pass by the crumb, glancing as if they care
As if they know the person, or had feelings
But no. They don’t.
We had 5 seconds to care, 5 seconds to love, to hate, to ignore,
The 5 seconds are over.
And the crumb still falls into that abyss.
