Intramurals

Team sports for men and women are soccer, volleyball, women's softball and men's flag football and basketball. Recreational activities and individual sports for men and women include a banner contest during Spirit Week. All intramural activities are organized by residential hall, which helps to develop camaraderie within the residential group. Students are eligible to participate if they have written parental permission, are medically cleared by their doctor and are not a varsity athlete in season. Staff at NCSSM participate on their own team within the student league structure.

Intramural activities are scheduled on Monday through Thursday afternoons from 3:35 to 4:15 pm during flex time (after the last class of the day and before varsity practice). This ideal scheduling and the availability of all athletic facilities for the intramural program have resulted in an exceptionally high participation rate (98%). The NCSSM staff, consisting of faculty and support personnel, typically fields teams in soccer, volleyball and basketball.

All intramural sports are highly organized, with students serving in the leadership positions of team captains and officials. Team captains are elected or selected by the residential hall and are responsible for entering their team in the league, notifying teammates about the game schedule, representing their team in all dealings with the Intramural Program and maintaining a high standard of sportsmanship in all intramural contests. Student officials volunteer or are assigned to the intramural program to fulfill their work service obligation to the state of North Carolina, based on previous officiating or playing experience. Student officials receive pre-season training in rules and officiating techniques so that they may function at a basic level of competence in intramurals.

An adult physical education teacher or a qualified substitute supervises each intramural contest. The supervisor is responsible for beginning the games on time, checking that all equipment and officials are present, providing First Aid or referral to the Athletic Trainer or Clinic when needed, interpreting rules for players and officials and insuring that all participants conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner.

Because there is a risk of injury even though the sports activity is supervised and prevention measures are taken, all participants are urged to carry medical insurance, in the event an accidental injury occurs. The Intramural Program does not assume any financial responsibilities for injuries occurring in Intramural competition. NCSSM does not carry accident insurance for participation in the Intramural Program. Because there is this risk of injury and the lack of accident insurance, students are required to have written permission from their parents to participate, acknowledging the lack of school accident insurance. Fortunately, due to the combined efforts of all parties - students, parents, officials, clinic staff and supervisors, there are no serious injuries to report in the program.

At the end of each sport season, team captains are sent an evaluation form to provide feedback to the Intramural Coordinator about their hall's experience in the league. This valuable information is collected anonymously and used in making decisions for program improvement. Team captains' evaluations have consistently rated the program between good and excellent.
