Campaign Support Continues To Rise

This fiscal year, the Odyssey Campaign saw a record 56% increase in year-end giving, compared to the same period last year. Additionally, Alumni support of the Campaign continues to rise, with a 44% increase in gifts from last year.

The Odyssey Campaign is the catalyst in providing NCSSM with the necessary resources to remain at the forefront of math and science education. Long a model for other schools, NCSSM plans to remain on the cutting edge, exploring new possibilities and breaking new ground. What began as an example of what education should be will continue to be an example of all that is possible. The Odyssey Campaign, a comprehensive multi-year fund-raising drive, generates funding to support our faculty, students, distance learning, and facilities.

Quarter Century Society Introduced, Alumni Set the Standard
Be a Part of our History

The 2005-2006 academic year marks the Quarter Century Celebration of The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Twenty-five years is a relatively short time period, yet, the accomplishments of our students and faculty are endless. Challenges abound; yet NCSSM’s future remains a kaleidoscope of opportunity.

To celebrate the School and her people, the Foundation established the Quarter Century Society. A gift of $25,000 (payable over a five-year period) will support the Foundation’s general endowment. As you know, there is no better way to ensure a healthy future for NCSSM than through the endowment. Inaugural members of the Quarter Century Society include: Alan Cline ’90 of Burlingame, Calif. Alan is vice president of Vista Equity Partners of San Francisco. He and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of two children, Katherine and Avery; Louis Gordon ’83 of Mooresville, N.C. Louis is president of L. Gordon Iron and Metal Company of Statesville; and Melissa P. Lawler ’89. Melissa and her husband, Brian, reside in Charlotte with their children, Brittany, Courtney and Sydney. Melissa is the National Account Manager for Green Point Mortgage. The Foundation thanks and applauds our Alumni for setting the standard.

As articulated in our Quarter Century theme, NCSSM “transforms learners and develops leaders.”
Your gift makes it all possible.

Alumnus Establishes New Endowment
The NCSSM Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Steffee Endowment for Student Research and Creativity. The endowment, established by Dr. Craig Steffee ’84, will, through the awarding of annual grants, support one or more independent projects carried out by NCCSM students. Projects submitted for consideration may originate from any formal academic program or may be independent of any established academic program.

“The time that I spent at NCSSM was undoubtedly the most important and formative personal growth experience of my young life,” said Dr. Steffee. “My academic studies and the cultural environment at NCSSM prepared me well for college and graduate school coursework and independent research, but I believe that my extracurricular scientific and non-scientific projects equally affected my development as a student and as a person. ...[With the Steffee Endowment], I would like to encourage and foster such opportunities for current and future NCSSM students, and to give back to the School some small fraction of the gift that my NCSSM experience has been to me.”

Duke Energy Supports NCSSM Summer Math Workshop
The NCSSM Foundation is thankful for Duke Energy’s recent gift of $20,000 in support of NCSSM’s scheduled 2006 Summer Workshop in Advanced Functions and Modeling. With Duke Energy’s support, 50 math teachers from throughout North Carolina will have the opportunity to develop their skills in this new mathematics class that is now being taught at high schools all across the state. The 2006 summer workshop will be NCSSM’s third consecutive presentation of the highly successful program; Duke Energy funds have supported all three years.
