Apply To NCSSM
Ensure Eligibility
Applicants must currently be in the 10th grade and their parents/legal guardians must be permanent residents of North Carolina by December 1 of the applicant's 10th grade year. Applicants should have already taken, or should be planning to take, Algebra II in their 10th grade year.
Create An Application Account
The NCSSM Application can be completed by electronic means only. There are no exceptions. In order to apply, students must create an application account. To do so, click 'Apply Now' which can be found on the left hand side of this screen. Once the Application Home Screen appears, read the helpfile Instructions for Completing Application then, fill out the form on the left called "Register" if it is a new application. Next, select whether you are applying to be an NCSSM residential student or an NCSSM Online student and click Submit. The next webpage you come to has more detailed instructions to progress through the application. Applicants must have their application sections finished by January 15, 2010 or 21 days from the time they first register for an account—WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. There are no exceptions to this deadline.
Take the SAT I
All applicants must take the SAT I as a 10th grade student. Only score reports from tests administered on the following dates will be accepted:
- October 10, 2009
- November 7, 2009
- December 5, 2009
- January 23, 2010
We recommend that students register to take the SAT I prior to the January test date. Test site cancellations due to inclement weather often occur during January.
Only official score reports or score reports on transcripts will be accepted; therefore, students must use the NCSSM special code 2241 in Block 11A of the SAT I registration form to ensure that test results are sent directly to the NCSSM Admissions Office.
Teachers and Counselor Evaluation Forms
In late-January, teachers and guidance counselors will be sent a link to the electronic Applicant Evaluation form via email. Teachers and counselors cannot access student forms until the student has submitted his or her application. Applicants must have a teacher evaluation form completed by:
- 9th or 10th grade Science Teacher
- 9th or 10th grade Mathematics Teacher
- 9th or 10th grade English Teacher
NCSSM does not accept any outside letters of recommendation.
Transcript Submission
All applicants must request that an official transcript be sent to NCSSM by their high school guidance department. Guidance Counselors should send in transcripts after first semester grades have been recorded. All transcripts must be sent in by March 15, 2010.
Discovery Days
All applicants are required to attend an assigned Discovery Day on the campus of NCSSM. On Discovery Day, applicants will take an NCSSM math test and an essay writing test. More information will be sent concerning Discovery Day, after a student has submitted his or her application.
