Applying to NCSSM

In order to complete the 2011-2012 application process and be considered for the NCSSM class of 2014, potential applicants must complete ALL of the following requirements:

Ensure Eligibility

  • Applicants must currently be in the 10th grade.
  • Applicants’ parents/legal guardians must be permanent residents of North Carolina by December 1st of the applicant's 10th grade year.

Create an Application Account

  • The NCSSM electronic application will be available online in mid October.  The application deadline is January 15th.
  • The NCSSM Application can be completed by electronic means only. There are no exceptions. In order to apply, students must have an application account.

The next webpage will give detailed instructions on how to progress through the application. Applicants must have each section of the electronic application completed within 21 days of the time they first register for an account or by January 15, 2012—WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.  There are no exceptions to this deadline.

Take the SAT

  • All applicants must take the SAT as a sophomore as part of the application process.  Applicants need not to have taken the SAT before creating an application account.
  • Only score reports from tests administered on the following dates will be accepted:

October 1, 2011

November 5, 2011

December 3, 2011

January 28, 2012

We recommend that applicants register to take the SAT prior to the January test date.  Test site cancellations due to inclement weather often occur during January.

  • To ensure that test results are sent directly to the NCSSM Admissions Office, students using a hard copy of the SAT registration form must enter the NCSSM special code 2241 in Block 11A.  Students registering online for the SAT must select North Carolina School of Science and Math from the list of schools, to send the score report.

Obtain Teacher and Counselor Evaluations

  • As part of the application process, applicants must secure evaluations from three teachers and his or her current guidance counselor.   Applicants must have a teacher evaluation form completed by a:
  1. 9th or 10th grade Science Teacher
  2. 9th or 10th grade Mathematics Teacher
  3. 9th or 10th grade English Teacher

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ask their teachers and counselor to complete an evaluation on their behalf.

By the end of January, teachers and guidance counselors will be sent--via email--a link to an electronic Applicant Evaluation form.  The link will be sent to the email address given by the student in his or her electronic application.

Discovery Days

All applicants are required to attend an assigned Discovery Day on the campus of NCSSM. On Discovery Day, applicants will take an NCSSM math test and an essay writing test. Details concerning Discovery Day will be updated in the student’s application account, after he or she has completed and submitted the application.

Submit a Transcript

NCSSM has partnered with the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) to enable applicants to submit their transcripts electronically.  To submit your transcript you must have a CFNC account.  To create an account, please go to www.cfnc.org and click Create My CFNC Account.  Once you have created an account or if you already have a CFNC account:

  1. Log into CFNC.org
  2. Under the Apply Section, click ‘To College,’ and then ‘Transcript Manager’
  3. Select North Carolina School of Science and Math from the pull down menu

All those applying from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district or from private schools must request that an official transcript be sent to NCSSM by their high school guidance department. Guidance Counselors should send in transcripts after first semester grades have been recorded. The NCSSM Office of Admissions will accept transcripts from February 1 until March 9, 2012.
