  Mini-Term
The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics places tremendous value on providing our students with unique educational opportunities outside of the classroom. Therefore each Spring, during an eight-day suspension of classes, our students are presented with two academic alternatives:

1. Register for one of the specialized mini-courses arranged by one or more NCSSM faculty members, or
2. Carry out an approved educational project of the student's own design with the sponsorship of an adult member of the NCSSM community.

Ranging from corporate "internships" to in-depth research projects alongside faculty or scientists outside of the NCSSM community, the goal of Mini-Term is to support our students in a rigorous exploration of a subject area of great interest to them in a way that will contribute to their future academic and personal aspirations.

Mini-term projects range from international travel to corporate mentorships to in-depth research projects alongside faculty or scientists outside of the NCSSM community. Whether exploring the brush strokes of Van Gogh, assisting in an archeological dig or determining the life-span of distant star systems, Mini-Term has become of the corner-stone of the NCSSM experience.

Students are asked to present detailed proposals on their topic and its value to their scholastic growth. In addition, they are asked to present their projects' to the NCSSM community during our annual Research Symposium.
