Whether it's by unearthing forgotten cultures, analyzing classic works of literature,
learning a second language, or creating images or music, the NCSSM Humanities
programs enable our students to discover new ways to explore the world around
them.
HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
The History and Social Science Discipline seeks to introduce students to a broad
range of cultures, ideologies, and ideas while encouraging constructive attitudes
toward conflict, diversity, and change. By providing insights into the structures,
functions, and historical developments of political, economic, and social institutions
around the globe, the discipline aims to increase the depth of students' understanding
of worlds past and worlds present.
ENGLISH
The NCSSM English curriculum mixes everything from explorations into classic
works of European, Asian, and American literature to the more modern literature
of these areas as well as Africa and Latin America. Designed to stress the fundamentals
of analytical thought and the importance of expository and descriptive written
communication, our English program engages students’ minds in ways that
will benefit every facet of their scholastic experience.
ART
Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
That is what the NCSSM art discipline is all about: invigorating the imagination.
A hub for creative expression, the art department plays a tremendous role in
the dynamics of our academic environment, allowing students the freedom to discover
new sides of themselves and balance the analytic with artistic in ceramics,
photography, painting, clay sculpture, silkscreen printing or by studying past
masters.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES
Learning new languages opens doors to new cultures. And with many alumni living
and contributing throughout the world, NCSSM holds firm to that notion. Our
language program investigates not just the fundamental and advanced levels of
its languages, but their histories, literature, and people. With multiple course
levels in Spanish, French, Japanese, German, and Latin, our students often leave
NCSSM fluent in a second language and with knowledge about other areas of the
world.
MUSIC
Visit the Music Department's
website.
NCSSM’s course offerings in music provide students the opportunity to
study music through the medium of performance. Performance is seen, not as an
end in itself, but as a means of understanding the fundamental makeup of music’s
ideas, origins, and legendary performers. Many of our students shine as brightly
in the music hall as they do in the classroom, winning scholarships, performing
in multiple concerts and events, and competing in national competitions. The
music discipline also offers courses in Recording Technology, Beginning Piano
and Guitar and Music Appreciation: Western Music and World Music. Our students
excel at a great deal more than science and math.
