Computer Science at NCSSM aims
to aggressively develop new talent in programming and related fields. Our campus’s
excellent technological infrastructure includes a wireless environment, internet
access, and faculty-maintained Web sites that offer a wealth of learning materials.
The department is committed to embracing and implementing new and important technologies
and programming techniques. Beginning in the 2005-06 school year, the current curriculum, which emphasizes learning development skills with open-source technologies, is being redeveloped de novo. Students will now gain procedural programming skills in the Python language and get an “early objects” course in the Dr. Java IDE. As the students gain sophistication, they will “graduate” to the Eclipse IDE and to programming Java at the UNIX command line. As a result, the AP course will be completely revamped, and advanced offerings will be created and implemented. We will also be reaching out to other disciplines to create new and exciting offerings that will expose students to computational issues in science, mathematics and other fields. This is an ambitious and exciting undertaking, but we are committed to making it work for our talented secondary students. |
