Chancellor's Welcome

Welcome to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. As chancellor of such a pioneering institution, I am very fortunate and honored to be a part of one of the most respected and innovative public high schools in the nation and a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system.

Opening its doors in 1980, NCSSM broke new ground in secondary education, becoming the model for 18 like-schools around the world. Today, the School stands as an example of excellence, enhancing and revitalizing public education statewide through distance education efforts, professional development and a pilot online initiative.

NCSSM faculty are some of the best in the world and the student body some of the best and brightest from every corner of North Carolina. Together, they create a community focused on fostering integrity, proliferating intellect and expanding worldviews. At NCSSM, we challenge our students not only to think, but to do.

I hope that you will explore our new Web site to learn more about the exciting things that NCSSM has to offer. But keep in mind that you're only getting a glimpse of what NCSSM is all about. The only way to fully appreciate NCSSM is to visit the historic Durham campus of what is truly North Carolina's high school.

Warm Regards,

Gerald L. Boarman
